Term 1 Week 3 Letter n

The second letter we explored this week is n for nose which was linked to the manners and relating to other topic work.

We also saw if we have other parts in our body which start with n words.  The children came up with words like neck and nails. We then moved on to other objects starting with n, such as numbers, newspaper, name, nut, notebook, nurse, net and necklace which we saw on the interactive whiteboard.

The jolly phonics story for the letter n sound is this.

Some children were playing outside.  They pretended to be aeroplanes so they spread their hands out wide and moved them up and down from side to side just like the wings of a plane saying n/ n/ n/.

  • Step 1 – Start at the top , go down
  • Step 2 – Bounce up
  • Step 3 –Tunnel, go down
  • Step 4 – And Tail


(Please follow the above steps when practicing writing letter sound n at home.)

The children made two crafts associated with letter n.  One was a face with all the features with particular emphasis on the nose.  They also stuck a tissue on this craft to remember that we have to sue one when sneezing.  The second craft was a necklace where they threaded coloured pasta onto a piece of ribbon.

Game Practice Ideas For Home

  • Threading small objects onto ribbon, shoes laces or sticks is a very good exercise for the children to develop pencil hand control. Threading objects could be pasta, beads, play dough balls amongst others. (I recommend such an exercise to be a parent and child activity or under adult  supervision)
  • Say the name of each object emphasizing and exaggerating the first letter sound of each object and ask your child if that object or picture starts with the letter sound n. This is a skill which needs loads of practice, so don’t get worried if they are not understanding as just what this means.  Praise at this point is very important to build their confidence   🙂
  • Use a small white board to practice the formation of letter n using colourful washable markers.
