Term 2 Week 3 Letter v, stories and photos

One of the letters for week 3 was letter v – violin.

We got to know that this classical instrument is made from wood and that it has four strings (linked to numeracy) which make the sound by vibrating after they are touched by a bow consisting of a stick with a ribbon of horsehair strung between the tip and frog at opposite ends.

Ms. Corinne got her violin from home to show it to the children.

We all appreciated the wonderful talents of an amazing 6-Year-old violinist playing “Let It Go” From Disney’s Frozen –


They also watched as very short story called Vivi the violin –


As usual the children were enthusiastic to try and come up with words which start with the v sound.  Words which featured were violin, van, voice, violet, vase, and vegetables.

They also played games on the white board such as the magic window game and sorting the v letter beans from others using pegs.

The children also followed the Jolly phonics story for the letter v sound:

Uncle Vic is a delivery man.  He is on his way to visit his niece and nephew.  When he arrives they set off in his van vroom!  They drive through the village to deliver some vegetables.  The children pretend to drive and go /v,v,v,v,v,v/.

  • Step 1 – Start at the top, slide down
  • Step 2 – and up the hill

As is the usual routine the children practiced their letter v formation in the scrapbook using the rainbow technique.

Important note – I told the children that letter v has 1 point at the bottom.  This bottom part is not round.

Craft associated with this letter – The children had a violin cutout which they sponge painted reddish brown.  All the violins are stuck outside our classroom door.

Practice Ideas for Home

  • You can give them a handful of magnetic letters which they stick on a board. Then they have to remove the letter of the day from the batch.  In this case letter v.
  • You can practice the letter formation by using a white board and colourful washable markers using the steps above.
  • You can place about 5 objects or pictures on the table, amongst which you have objects starting with the letter v
  • Say the name of each object emphasizing and exaggerating the first letter sound of each object and ask your child if that object or picture starts with the letter sound v. This is a skill which needs loads of practice. Praise at this point is very important to build their confidence    🙂
